What should I know about Ageless Actives?

Ageless Actives combats the effects of “cellular aging,” which is result of free radical damage on cell proteins, membranes and DNA. What we see as signs of aging—wrinkles, loss of lean body mass, bone strength, memory loss and reduced physical capacity—is, in fact, “cellular aging.” By combining CoQ10 and Vitamin D3, as well as age-defying Resveratrol, Ageless Actives works to support the body’s vital systems, support energy production and protect cells from the effects of free radicals.

How can I benefit from using Ageless Actives?

Ageless Actives uses new technology making our CoQ10 800% more absorbable than dry powder forms. It also contains 1,000 IU per serving of Vitamin D3 to enhance the body’s absorption of calcium and maintain a strong cardiovascular system. There are also adaptogens and 250 mg of Resveratrol per serving, which is the equivalent of more than 160 glasses of red wine, as well as red grape and pomegranate extracts to help protect cells from the effects of free radicals.

Gray mouse lemurs given resveratrol avoid seasonal obesity. (Photo courtesy of Wikimedia Commons)

Resveratrol—a natural red-wine compound previously shown to protect mice against excess weight gain when fed a high-fat diet—has now been found to reduce seasonal weight gain in gray mouse lemurs in a primate model of obesity.

The study was published in BMC Physiology by a team of researchers from the Centre Nationale de la Recherche Scientifique, Museum National d’Histoire Naturelle, of Paris, who wrote that they had “demonstrated for the first time the short-term effects of resveratrol on the metabolism of an heterothermic [with varying body temperatures] primate.”

Gray mouse lemurs are a species of prosimian primate that can double in weight (seasonal fattening) within a matter of weeks. This increase in energy reserves is induced by the arrival of shorter days and longer nights (shorter photoperiod), which serves as a means of adapting to the long dry winters in its natural environment in Madagascar.

When given four weeks of resveratrol supplementation at the time of pre-winter fattening (200 milligrams per kilogram per day), the gray mouse lemurs exhibited the following “significant effects on energy metabolism”:

Reduction in seasonal body-mass gain associated with an increase in resting metabolic rate of 29 percent while decreasing food calorie intake by 13 percent.

Strong reduction of daily heterothermia expression (changes of body temperature relating to season) with no change in the daily amount of locomotor activity.

An increased secretion of glucose-dependent insulinotropic polypeptide (a gut hormone known to induce insulin secretion) levels that may play an additive role in limiting body-mass gain.

The researchers concluded that, “resveratrol activates energy expenditure by inducing an increase in resting metabolic rate and a decrease in torpor [temporary hibernation] patterns that play key roles in energy saving in this primate. Moreover, resveratrol had a satiety effect in this primate that reduced their spontaneous food intake.”

Resveratrol’s effects are potentially due to stimulation of SIRT1, one of family of sirtuin enzymes, that has a direct role in fat metabolism. Calorie restriction and, recently, intermittent fasting have also been shown to activate SIRT1 activity.

Mouse Lemurs to Humans

In a prepared statement, Fabienne Aujard, a co-author of the study, wrote, “The physiological benefits of resveratrol are currently under intensive investigation, with recent work suggesting that it could be a good candidate for the development of obesity therapies.”

When asked through e-mail about how the study related to humans, Aujard replied that the main point of the study is that the gray mouse lemur is a non-human primate, “This species is genetically closer to human. The data obtained with this lemur should be more easily extrapolated to humans compared to rodent studies.”

Investigation conducted in humans have mainly studied bioavailability in lesser amounts, not in the high amounts given to the lemurs (equivalent of a human weighing 70 kilograms taking 14 grams of resveratrol). At present, the maximum single dose studied in humans has been 5 grams (70 milligrams per kilogram for a human of 70 kilograms).

“However, despite being a primate, the mouse lemur’s organism is certainly very different from that of a human because of its size and its seasonality,” writes Aujard. “The mouse lemur is a small animal and, like all small mammals, it has a very active metabolism, thus, a very important nutrient metabolism. Therefore, we believe that the doses to be ingested by human to reach the same long-term effects will certainly be lower than that given to lemurs.”

The general recommendation for humans is between 50 to 500 milligrams daily, which is safe as supported by human clinical studies. Although this study shows promising results, it is not yet known whether or not resveratrol will influence fat metabolism or body composition in humans.

Ever wonder just how IsaDermix® skincare works to keep skin naturally healthy and young? It’s more than just cleansing and moisturizing.

Skin is the largest organ in our body, and being on the outside where it is exposed to the environment, it takes the most beating. Free radicals are particularly damaging to skin cells and are generated by UV exposure and internally, from cells’ metabolism. These damages change skin structure and lead to what we see as visible signs of aging—brown spots, wrinkles, dry appearance, dull tone.

Most skin products just moisturize—meaning they prevent water from evaporating by placing a layer of oil on top of the skin. But people want more from skin products and there are now bioactive ingredients available that can really make a profound impact on your skin’s health and appearance.

Products that tackle the aging process and still provide a nice, non-greasy moisturizer are highly sought after. The IsaDermix product line developed by Isagenix works synergistically to help protect against oxidative damage and fine lines while plumping up the skin and helping to reduce dark circles.

The products attack aging from many angles. First and foremost, our day, night and eye creams are developed with a patented delivery system that actually gets the active ingredients to the lower, dermal layer, where most of the action lies. Few products on the market can offer such an advanced, Qu-some delivery system. In addition, the products contain some of the most sophisticated, clinically tested and shown to effectively reduce facial lines, fade brown spots, tighten skin and hydrate cells to give a healthy glow and feel.

We have ingredients that help stimulate collagen and elastin (peptides and vitamins), which are key proteins in the dermal layer that form our skin framework. As we age, the number of these proteins continually decrease, and leave us with sagging, dry skin. The IsaDermix line even has ingredients (peptides) that help inhibit the breakdown of these marvelous molecules that keep our skin looking young. We hit it at both ends—help stimulate production, reduce its breakdown. That’s true skin health!

To be effective you must have the right ingredients, in beneficial amounts and be able to deliver those bioactive ingredients to the dermal layer! We can say we have accomplished all those hurdles with this product line.

One particularly great product is our vitamin C-serum. Few people know that the form of vitamin C is critical for promoting collagen synthesis. The form found in most skin care products is ascorbic acid and the acid form does not stimulate collagen and, in fact, may even irritate the skin. The only form shown to help the aging process is the tetrahexyldecyl ascorbate form—look and see if you find this in other products claiming to have Vitamin C! And you need to have a lot, too—we do!

Skin care is not simple but reducing the signs of aging is not impossible is you use the right products and eat healthy and drink plenty of water. The Research and Development Department at Isagenix have poured through tons of different formulations and have come up with what we feel is the best compromise in natural ingredients and bioactive, effective age-busters. Try it and see for yourself.

When losing weight, people should be careful to not lose essential micronutrients. Losing weight is an admirable goal, but not if proper nutrition is lost in the process. Most popular diets do not provide adequate intake of vitamins and minerals and these could put dieters at higher risk of nutrient deficiencies, a new study reports.

Christopher Gardner and his colleagues from Stanford Prevention Research Center and the Department of Medicine, Stanford University Medical School evaluated micronutrient quality of four diets—Atkins, Zone, LEARN (Lifestyle, Exercise, Attitudes, Relationships), and Ornish—and found each failed to provide adequate amounts of certain vitamins and minerals.

The researchers, who published their findings June 23 in American Journal of Clinical Nutrition, wrote, “We found that among a free-living population trying to follow alternative weight-loss diets, the intakes of several micronutrients were potentially inadequate, which differed by diet group. Given that successful weight loss and its maintenance require adopting new dietary habits and sustaining them on an ongoing basis, the long-term implications of these potentially inadequate intakes could result in clinically relevant nutritional deficiencies.”

Study Details

In the study, participants included 311 premenopausal overweight or obese women ages 25 to 50 who were recruited from Stanford’s A TO Z trial (a large randomized trial comparing weight-loss diets). They were randomly assigned to read one of four diet books: Dr. Atkins New Diet Revolution (2002) (5); Enter the Zone, A Dietary Roadmap (1995) (6); The LEARN Program for Weight Management 2000 (9th edition, 2000) (20); or Eat More Weigh Less (2001) by Dean Ornish.

Each of the diet groups also attended one-hour evening classes each week for eight weeks. The participants were told to master their assigned diet during the eight weeks, and then follow it for the next 10 months. The researchers collected data on dietary intake from the participants by making unannounced 24-hour dietary recall assessments by telephone.

Of the four different diets, the Zone fared best for micronutrient adequacy, which the authors attribute to its balanced 40:30:30 distribution of calories from carbohydrate, fat and protein. The nutrients lacking in those following the Ornish diet were vitamin E, B12 and zinc; for Atkins: thiamin, folic acid, vitamin C and iron; and for LEARN: vitamin E, thiamin and magnesium.

Data from the study were based on food intake alone and did not include dietary supplements. However, the authors note that the participants who didn’t take supplements prior to dieting continued to avoid multivitamin or multimineral supplement while dieting.

Low Calories Without Sacrificing Micronutrients

When reducing caloric intake, it’s important to be aware that doing so may also lead to decreased micronutrient intake, the authors concluded. Additionally, the higher-protein, moderately low-carbohydrate Zone diet was the best in also providing nutrient-dense foods.

Choosing foods that are nutrient dense or regular supplementation with essential vitamins and minerals is critical for long-term health.

Similarly, findings from another study (May issue of Journal of the International Society of Sports Nutrition), reported other popular diets such as Atkins for Life, The South Beach Diet, DASH, and The Best Life Diet also resulted in micronutrient deficiencies.

A new report reviews how fasting affects fat and cholesterol, which also may apply to Cleanse Days.

Harvard researchers at Massachusetts General Hospital have found that fasting causes an enzyme (SIRT1) to shut down production of fat and cholesterol, which could open up the scientific field to studying new approaches for lowering weight and improving lipid profiles.

Fasting has been previously known to suppress proteins called SREBPs, which are responsible for controlling fat synthesis and storage, but the mechanism was not well understood. The researchers reported that after a series of experiments in worms, fruitflies and mice they found that fasting acts directly on SIRT1, one of a family of sirtuin enzymes, thereby down-regulating these SREBPs.

Sirtuin enzymes have become an active area of research since early 2000s because of findings that stimulation of sirtuin activity—via calorie restriction, intermittent fasting and compounds such as resveratrol—protected mice fed a high-calorie diet against weight gain, and increased the lifespan in nematode worms, fruitflies, fish and rodents.

Geneticists and medical researchers are only just beginning to understand how genes encode sirtuin enzymes, how the enzymes influence energy metabolism, and investigating various drugs as possible candidates to stimulate SIRT1.

Fasting and Cleanse Days

The study may potentially offer new insights into the science behind Isagenix products and systems. ”The biological mechanism by which fasting turns off the proteins that stimulate fat and cholesterol synthesis may explain partially our success with our two weight-loss programs, where we incorporate one to two days per week of Cleanse Days, which we’ve shown successfully produce healthy weight loss in adults,” says Susie Rockway, Ph.D., director of Isagenix Research and Science.

Dr. Rockway adds, “Similarly, the new study is interesting as it could have other implications because it offers support to intermittent fasting, or Cleanse Days, as a potential alternative to caloric restriction for stimulating SIRT1.”

In late April, Dr. Rockway presented the results of two pilot studies—a nine-day study and 28-day study—both of which found Isagenix products and Cleanse Days supported adults with healthy weight loss, maintaining healthy lipid profiles. The studies also found subjects felt better about their weight, health and energy levels.

Cleanse Days— days of limited food calories and water complemented by the botanical-based detox drink, Cleanse for Life—are a component of the Isagenix Cleansing and Fat Burning System, a nutritional program developed by the company to help customers achieve their health goals with cleansing and detoxification, replenishing with proper diet and nutrition, and controlling caloric intake.

Getting enough vitamin D may help keep your weight in check and your heart healthy.

Dr. Michael Holick of Boston University Medical Center says he’s “just one of the many scientists” exploring vitamin D, but he easily can be considered the world’s foremost authority on the sunshine vitamin.

In the 1970s, in fact, it was Dr. Holick who first isolated the major circulating form of vitamin D in plasma, 25-hydroxyvitamin D, as well as the active form produced by the kidneys.

He was also one of the first scientists to warn the medical community about the potential implications of widespread vitamin D insufficiency. When asked about the prevalence of low vitamin D status, he answers that it’s the “most common medical condition in the world, believe it or not.”

Dr. Holick has championed the cause of bringing vitamin D into the limelight for decades, writing numerous scientific papers as well as two popular books on the subject of vitamin D and health.

Getting D Facts from Dr. Holick

While seeking the latest findings from vitamin D research, David Despain, manager of science communications of the Isagenix Research and Science Team, caught up with Dr. Holick and sought out his advice on sun exposure, vitamin D supplementation and vitamin D’s potential ties to weight management, insulin resistance and heart health.*

Q: Dr. Holick, thank you for taking the time to update us on vitamin D research. Elvis Presley once said, “Truth is like the sun. You can shut it out for a time, but it ain’t going away.” Don’t you think this quote represents the vitamin D story?

A: Amen. Elvis was right on target. Our sun has been demonized for 40 years unchallenged. It’s quite remarkable that it’s part of the psyche of the world. But it’s caused a major problem, which is worldwide vitamin D deficiency [or insufficiency] and markedly increased risk of chronic disease for children and adults.

You can instantly make vitamin D, but if you’re avoiding the sun as most people do it puts you at high-risk of deficiency. Why is that? It’s been demonized for so long because the dermatologists have come out with the big “C” word [melanoma skin cancer from sun exposure]. And there’s no question that skin cancer is on the rise. The major reason is because back in the ’60s people used to put baby oil on and bake in the sun. Right? Now, all of the sudden, that’s starting to haunt them later in life. It increased their risk of non-melanoma skin cancer.

But often what people don’t realize is that melanoma, the most deadly cancer—which is also what they lump together with skin cancer from the sun—most melanomas occur on the least sun-exposed areas. Occupational sun exposure decreases your risk of developing melanoma. There was a study done in a group in Texas that if you had the most sun exposure as a child and young adult and you did get melanoma, then you were more likely to survive it.

Q: Would you comment on vitamin D being a hormone, and the oldest hormone?

A: Well, the reason why we say that [it's the oldest hormone] is because I asked the question several years ago. If you take phytoplankton—there’s a phytoplankton species called Emiliani huxleii has been identified as one of the oldest phytoplankton species that has been unchanged for 750 million years. When we looked at that organism, it made a huge amount of vitamin D when it was exposed to sunlight.

It’s a hormone you make in your skin, then it’s inactive. It has to go to your liver to get hydroxylated to 25-hydroxyvitamin D, which is the major circulating form, the form you should ask your doctor to test for vitamin D status. Then it goes to your kidneys where it’s activated to 1,25-dihydroxyvitamin D, then it goes to your bone and intestines and kidneys.

Q: As a hormone, we also know now that it has a greater role on the body besides speeding up absorption of calcium for bone health. There is a link to cardiovascular health, right? What’s the state of the science?

A: As for the heart, we know that vascular smooth muscle cells have vitamin D receptors and we know that vitamin D seems to play a role in regulating blood pressure, regulating heart muscle cells in their growing activity, regulates to some degree the strength of the heart in terms of its pumping ability. That’s why it’s not at all surprising that just two years ago out of the Framingham heart study it shows that if you are vitamin D deficient you [are not providing optimal support for cardiovascular health].

Q: How does vitamin D’s relationship to heart health affect you if you are overweight?

A: This issue for obese people is particularly important because vitamin D is fat-soluble and is incorporated in your body fat. We showed many years ago that if you take an obese person and give him an oral dose of vitamin D or put him in a [UVB] tanning bed, it only raises his blood level to less than 50 percent than what a normal-weighted individual does and we’re talking about a BMI [Body Mass Index] of greater than 30. He needs two to three times more [of vitamin D than a person of normal BMI].

We know that obese people have more aches in their muscles, which is definitely due to vitamin D deficiency. They have muscle weakness. They’re fatigued. They just don’t want to go. It’s in part due to the deficiency. We also know that fat cells have a vitamin D receptor. There’s some evidence—we’re doing some research right now—that suggests that maybe vitamin D helps keep fat cells in check.

Q: Really? By what mechanism is it that you think vitamin D could help keep fat cells in check?

A: It may regulate fat cell maturation. It may regulate fat cell fat accumulation. That’s brand new stuff that we’re taking a look at that we’ve not yet published on. We’re just beginning to look at it.

Q: Is there any relationship established between low vitamin D status and insulin sensitivity?

A: We think so. We know that from NHANES (National Health and Nutritional Examination Survey) that [there may be a relationship associated with insulin sensitivity].

Q: We’ve heard a lot about a new established relationship between vitamin D and the immune system. Would you comment on the mechanism by which vitamin D is involved?

A: Well we know is that your immune system is regulated by vitamin D. We know that the cell macrophages definitely gobble up infectious agents because of vitamin D, macrophages activate vitamin D locally, and it stimulates production of a defensive protein that kills infectious agents. A study was done to show that if you raise your blood level, that you have more activity of your macrophages in killing infective agents. If there’s anything out there that helps to support the immune system, it’s probably vitamin D.

Q: Do you agree that everyone should be checked for vitamin D status?

A: Well, that’s the problem. It’s not an unreasonable thing to do, but I can already tell you they’re deficient. We know almost everyone’s deficient. If a normal adult isn’t taking at least 1,500 to 2,000 IU from supplement and diet—and you can’t really get it from your diet—then we know you’re vitamin D deficient. And so, to try to screen everybody, all the obese people in the United States is such a huge cost burden.

In fact, Medicare is looking at this right now and wanting to control the doctors’ use of that assay. They do not want to use it as a screening tool. I don’t disagree with that. Because we know that you can very effectively correct vitamin D deficiency, treat it, and prevent it from occurring again, if you give the person enough vitamin D. So only if they have fat malabsorption syndrome, or has had gastric bypass surgery, or cystic fibrosis, IBD, or celiac sprue—all of those individuals should be tested because you can’t predict whether or not they’re going to be able to absorb the vitamin D that you give them as a supplement.

Q: What about older people? Does the requirement for vitamin D supplementation increase with older age because of declined absorption?

A: No it does not. That’s what everybody says. [Note: Elderly can absorb vitamin D as easily as younger people.] What does change with age is the ability to make it in your skin. We showed many years ago that if you compare a 70-year-old to a 20-year-old, the 70-year-old will have about a 70 percent reduced ability to produce vitamin D. But we also went on to show that you can take an older person and still have them exposed to sunlight or simulated sunlight and they make a lot of vitamin D. Your body has a huge capacity to make vitamin D. We showed that healthy adults in bathing suits getting a minimal erythermal dose get an equivalent to ingesting 20,000 IU of vitamin D.

Now you begin to understand why the 100 IU in a glass of milk or orange juice or the 400 IU in a multivitamin is probably one tenth of what we really need to satisfy our body’s requirements for heart health or for reducing risk diseases.

Q: Do you agree as other scientists have suggested that the average person should be getting at least 20 minutes of sunshine per day for adequate vitamin D intake along with supplementation?

Dr. Holick has been researching vitamin D since the 1970s.

A: I don’t know about 20 minutes a day because it depends upon time of day, season of the year, latitude, and your degree of skin pigmentation. What I tell people is, if you know that you’re going to be out in June at noon-time for 30 minutes, in Arizona, and you’re going to get a light sunburn to your skin, to go out 50 percent of that time.

Always protect your face, it’s the most sun exposed, the most sun damaged. But you can certainly expose your arms and legs and not worry about it, in my opinion. Abdomen, back, not a problem. The more skin you expose, the more [vitamin D] that you make.

Q: Do you expect the Institute of Medicine’s recommendations for Adequate Intake of vitamin D to change in the United States anytime soon to reflect findings of new research?

A: Yes, there will definitely be new Adequate Intakes. What you really care about though is not the AI recommendation, what you care about is the Upper Limit—that’s what prevents manufacturers from putting vitamin D into foods. The amounts that you can put in and the amounts that supplements can contain.

The safe upper limit right now is considered to be 2,000 IU for adults. The major manufacturers like Coca Cola or who make Minute Maid orange juice for example put only 100 IU in a glass, because if they put in any more then they start adding that up, drinking milk and taking a multivitamin, you’re over the 2,000 IU limit.

Then if you get some toxicity like a kidney stone, it doesn’t matter that it’s not due to the vitamin D, the lawyers will say that it is if you put more than you should’ve put in. So they need to increase it like to 10,000 IU in which case, then we can really have an impact on the entire U.S. population and the world’s population because they could now put more vitamin D in the food.

Q: Dr. Holick, this has been very interesting and I’m sure it will be interesting to our readers. Thank you for your time. Also, congrats on the new book. We’ll be ordering a couple of copies for our library.

A: Wonderful. Feel free to stay in touch.

Isagenix seeks to help customers easily avoid common food allergens. At Isagenix we understand that people who are living with food allergies require accurate food labeling information for making informed choices up front about what Isagenix products they are able to enjoy. For this reason, the company has made a quick-reference table available as a resource to Isagenix customers for more than five years.

Now the company has expanded the table to include recently launched products as well as additional information about more common food allergens in existing Isagenix products.

The newly expanded document—which previously provided information only on the Food and Drug Administration’s recognized eight most common allergens: peanuts, tree nuts, eggs, milk, shellfish, fish, wheat (gluten) and soy*—now includes information on mollusks, honey, royal jelly, rice, celery, and other vegetables.

The Isagenix Allergen and Lifestyle Preferences Table also acts as an easy quick-reference for those who have vegetarian or lacto-vegetarian lifestyle preferences.

Eating red chili peppers helps with weight loss, suggests study. Scientists have already known for some time that capsaicin found in cayenne pepper (Capsicum anuum), or red chili pepper, is able to increase fat-burning potential by influencing secretion of adrenal gland hormones. A new studynow suggests that this spicy compound may also combat weight gain in other ways by changing the make-up of proteins in fat cells.

Jong Won Yun and his colleagues at Daegu University, of South Korea, who published in April’s issue of Journal of Proteome Research, say they discovered that capsaicin alters proteins in fat cells that lead to markedly increased thermogenesis and fat metabolism, which suggests that this spice commonly used for flavoring foods “may be a useful phytochemical” for battling the bulge.

To better understand the chili compound’s mechanisms, the researchers compared its effects versus a saline solution on rats fed high-fat diets. The rats whose diets included 10 milligrams of capsaicin per kilogram per day had altered proteins that led to increased fat oxidation. They also lost an average of 8 percent of body fat during the study.

The study’s findings are red hot as the prevalence of overweight and obesity has reached epidemic proportions globally, with the World Health Organization reporting more than 1 billion people overweight and at least 300 million of them clinically obese. Consultation with a healthcare professional is always advised when beginning a weight management program and individual weight loss results will depend on level of activity and caloric intake.

Scientists must continue to perform more research to determine if cayenne pepper has similar effects on humans as it has in animals, although this study hints that there may be some benefit to ordering Indian, Thai or Mexican food “extra spicy.”

Previous research has also linked capsaicin with helping to assist in reducing fat levels in blood, reducing growth of fat cells, and inhibiting fat cell maturation. Capsaicin also may influence signaling pathways that lead to increased fat cell self-destruction.

Lab study is revealing resveratrol’s unique actions on human fat cells.

A recent study published in American Journal of Clinical Nutrition is offering new insight on how resveratrol—a naturally occurring plant compound—affects fat cell biology.

Scientists have been researching resveratrol’s effects on fat cells ever since a study in 2006 published in Nature showed it protects lab mice fed a high-calorie diet against weight gain and obesity. The principal hypothesis has been that resveratrol activates a gene called sirtuin 1 (Sirt1), which is also activated by calorie restriction.

The new study of University of Ulm, Germany, the first performed in vitro on human fat cells, confirms resveratrol activates Sirt1, thereby interfering with fat cell maturation, fat accumulation, and blocking secretion of inflammatory chemicals from fat cells.

Resveratrol also stimulated glucose uptake into cells and blocked glucose conversion to fat in fat cells.

The study’s findings may have large implications because obesity has reached epidemic proportions globally, with the World Health Organization reporting more than 1 billion people overweight and at least 300 million of them clinically obese.

More research is required to determine if reseveratrol will have similar effects on reducing bodyfat in humans. When beginning a weight management program, consultation with a healthcare professional is always advised and individual weight loss results will depend on level of activity and caloric intake.

Scientists first became interested in resveratrol after it was suggested as a potential compound in red wine responsible for the “French Paradox.” The paradox, which has puzzled medical scientists, is that people living in France have a lower risk of cardiovascular disease despite a widespread diet high in fat and regular smoking.

Source: Fischer-Posovszky P, Kukulus V, Tews D et al. Resveratrol regulates human adipocyte number and function in a Sirt1-dependent manner. Am J Clin Nutr 2010;92:5-15.

Insulin resistance may be primary cause of NAFLD.

What is it?

Fatty liver is also known as Non- Alcoholic Steatorrhoeic Hepatosis (NASH) or Non-Alcoholic-Fatty-Liver-Disease (NAFLD). NAFLD primarily affects people over 30 years old who are over weight. In the USA about 15 to 20% of people are affected with NAFLD and it can even effect children. It affects a much higher percentage of over weight people.

However, in a recent study looking at the role of insulin resistance in fatty liver disease, there was no significant difference in glucose uptake during the test between normal-weight and overweight NAFLD subjects. This finding rules out the possibility that obesity plays a significant role in fatty liver disease. This test suggests that insulin resistance in NAFLD might be a primary cause of NAFLD, sometimes aggravated by obesity and diabetes associated insulin resistance. In NAFLD patients, the blood sugar level was normal or high-normal in the fasting state. Despite high levels of insulin in the blood stream, the liver did not switch off glucose production in response to insulin infusion, indicating the presence of liver insulin resistance.

The liver is the largest gland in the body. There is evidence that growing older is not a reason for the liver to function any less efficiently. It is estimated that the liver has over 500 different functions.

The function of the liver is to:

Assist in the digestion of food. It makes bile, which is needed to digest fats.

It makes many chemicals important for functions all over the body

It helps to keep the blood clean and well-maintained by removing toxins, dead cells, micro-organisms from the blood stream. It is essentially a filter and cleanser of the blood stream thereby helping the body to fight infections and to get rid of poisons.

regulates fat metabolism

major fat-burning organ in the body

It stores carbohydrates in a form that allows a quick release of energy when it is needed. This is why people with liver damage may lack energy.

It regulates blood sugar.

It makes plasma proteins, needed to help the blood to clot

When the liver is not able to filter and cleanse the blood stream it will become overloaded with toxins and fat. A poorly functioning liver can lead to autoimmune conditions and diabetes; and because the liver regulates fat metabolism, if your liver is unhealthy you will have difficulty in controlling your weight. Normally the liver not only burns fat, it dumps extra fat into the intestines. A liver which is fatty is actually storing fat which makes you feel sick and can actually lead to an early death.

Fatty liver, no matter what it’s called, is easy to understand. It means that healthy liver cells are being replaced with fat! Since fat cells weigh more than liver cells, the liver becomes enlarged and heavier. If you could see your liver it would look yellow, instead of red, and greasy. You also have pain in your upper, right abdomen, over the liver. Your doctor can see gallstones and excess fat in an ultrasound scan of the liver.

What are the signs that you might have NAFLD? They are:

You are over weight and find it hard to loose weight. You probably carry a lot of your weight in your abdomen

You and your doctor are not happy about your cholesterol. Your cholesterol and triglycerides are elevated in your blood

You may have Syndrome X (insulin resistance)

Your blood sugar values are too high. Your doctor calls it type 2 diabetes or Adult Onset Diabetes

You feel tired most of the time and have very little energy.

You’re sick all the time because your immune system is weak

Your liver enzymes are elevated

Fatty liver is the most common cause of abnormal liver function tests in the USA. The elevated liver enzyme results mean that there is damage to the liver cells. Liver enzymes are normally found mostly within liver cells. Only when the cells are damaged or inflamed, do the enzymes leak into the blood stream. This can occur due to:

a fatty liver

excessive alcohol consumption

some medications such as:

long term antibiotics or pain killers

synthetic Hormone Replacement

viral infections of the liver such as hepatitis C & B

auto-immune hepatitis

hemachromatosis

primary biliary cirrhosis

exposure to toxic chemicals such as insecticides, pesticides or organic solvents

incorrect diet

Team Bonuses

The Isagenix Team Compensation Plan has one of the strongest payouts in Network Marketing history. We guarantee to pay out 50 percent of our entire Business Volume (BV) in the form of commissions as Team Bonuses to our Independent Associates. The plan, along with our wonderful products, provides a powerful system to develop a lasting stream of residual income deposited to your account automatically every week.

You earn by becoming a Consultant and building two Associate Sales Teams—your Left Sales Team and your Right Sales Team. The BV you accumulate, from sales of commissionable products, is then paid out to you as Team Bonuses every time you generate a Cycle. Your BV accumulates no matter how many levels deep. See Compensation Plan Video for more information on how to become a Consultant and generate Cycles.

Matching Check Bonuses

Once you become an Executive and maintain 10 personally enrolled Active “paid-as” Consultants, five on each Sales Team, you qualify for a Matching Check Bonus. The 10 percent match is paid to you from all income checks generated by personally enrolled Consultants and Executives in your organization. The benefits of the 10% Matching Bonus are powerful, because the plan encourages Upline Associates to work directly with their Downline in order to help them become successful. The principle of teamwork is heightened throughout all your organization. As an Isagenix Independent Associate, you work for yourself, but never by yourself.

Autoship Rewards

When you maintain a monthly Autoship order, you’ll enjoy rewards pricing on select systems and paks and become eligible to earn incentive bonuses. Visit your Back Office to learn about current incentives.
